Sticking To New Years's Resolutions!

Sticking To New Years's Resolutions!

The new year is once again upon us. And many of you will resolve to lose weight this year! You won't be alone in this endeavor. According to a new Marist Poll, weight loss and being a better person share the top spot for New Year's resolution. But unfortunately, New Year's resolution don't often stick. In fact, 80% fail by February. Here is what you can do to beat the odds and make 2018 the best year of your life!

1. Don't try to lose weight.

I have been trying to lose weight all of my life and it never really worked. I would go on these crazy diets that would work initially but over time I would go back to my old habits and gain more weight than I had lost. This time around I instead focused on eating a balanced diet full of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. The weight will come off naturally and stick permanently.

2. Keep a food journal.

Keep a detailed diary of everything you eat for 2 to 4 weeks. Most people don't actually know just how much they are consuming and are surprised at the results. Keeping a diary will let you know exactly what you are eating and how much. Use the diary to cut out all unnecessary food. Bitesnap is a cool app that will track your food and is available for Android and iPhone.

3. Exercise.

This is a no-brainer. Workouts don't have to be the nightmare scenario that many people envision. In fact, it's entirely possible to actually enjoy exercise. A combination of healthy whole food diet and exercise is the fastest and safest way to lose weight and keep it off. Just keep in mind that this a lifestyle change and it is for life. In more ways than one.

4. Cut or reduce drinking.

Another fast way to healthy life is to reduce alcohol consumption. Not only does alcohol provide more unnecessary calories but it also increases cortisol production in the body. High cortisol has been linked to fatigue, blood pressure, cancer, impaired immune system, and other maladies. And it might be the main reason you can't lose the weight on your sides and gut!

5. Don't look for overnight results.

You didn't gain the weight overnight and you certainly won't lose it overnight. Slow and steady is the best way to keep the weight off permanently. Look to lose about half a pound a week.

I personally think New Year's resolutions are stupid. Resolutions that stick are done now. At this moment. Not tomorrow, next week, or next year. The road ahead isn't as difficult as you might think. Get healthy for yourself and no one else!
